<idAbs>Increasing world population and related demand for commodities has made resource rich countries in Africa, South America and Asia hot prospects for industrial expansion. Activity levels in the extractive industries such as mining and oil and gas are occurring at an increasing pace, and in Africa for example, the extractive industry boom is driving an unprecedented expansion of infrastructure into sparsely populated regions. New roads and railways are being built to support these industries. Contrary to subsistence and small-scale activities, these developments are happening at a rapid pace and on a large scale, which will inevitably impact on land use, areas of ecological and soco-econo0mic importance such as Intact Forest Landscapes (IFL).</idAbs>
